As the name implies, a recipe book is a book containing recipes for preparing certain foods. Incidentally, the term recipe for a cooking instruction is explained by the connection between nutrition and the art of healing.
Already in ancient Greece, doctors wrote prescriptions for both medications and food, for example, in the context of a diet.
Recipe books can be divided into three main groups:
First, there are recipe books as quite detailed collections of recipes, which are primarily intended for professional cooks.
On the other hand, there are the so-called school cookbooks, which are textbooks with standard recipes and are aimed primarily at beginners. In addition to the recipes, such recipe books usually also contain descriptions of basic kitchen techniques and some product information.
The third large group are books for home cooks and those who want to write their own recipe book will probably write a book that belongs to this category. It is not difficult to learn how to write recipes, because recipes are less concerned with artistic demands. It’s about making the recipe that way, and formulating the instructions in such a way that they are appealing and understandable, and it’s possible to boil them down without much difficulty.
Write instructions and planning to the recipe book
So how should an author proceed if he wants to write a recipe book?
The first step on the way to your own recipe book is in the planning. The author should consider what concept he is pursuing with his recipe book, be it a book with his favorite recipes, a book of recipes from a particular kitchen, a book on the preparation of a particular ingredient or a book for a specific target group, such as diabetics , Vegetarians, singles or seniors, should be.
The next step is to collect and select ideas and draft recipes. The skeleton for the recipe book is ready and in the next step, the author can start writing the recipes.
Although there are no strict formal rules for prescriptions, some practices have been proven in practice. As a rule, recipes are divided into four elements, namely the list of ingredients, a picture, the instructions and additional tips. In the list of ingredients, the required ingredients are listed with quantities, usually the quantities are given for four or six servings.
Of course, depending on the target group, modifications are also possible here. As part of the tutorial, the author describes step by step how the food is prepared. It makes sense to work with short, clear and precise statements in order to avoid misunderstandings. In addition to the work instructions, there are also time and temperature specifications in the manual.
As a supplement, there are often other tips under the recipe, such as how typical mistakes can be avoided, which ingredients are suitable alternatively or which side dishes fit particularly well to the respective food. A recipe is often rounded off by a picture showing the finished result.
The main work is completed and now only minor details are missing.
Recipe book abbreviations and preface
For example, the author has to decide if he wants to provide his recipe book with a preface or a dedication. In addition, he can consider whether it makes sense to create an overview with the most common abbreviations.
At the beginning or the end of the book, there is often a register in which the recipes are usually listed in alphabetical order.
Finally, the author has to make one last decision, namely whether he wants to write a self-contained or an extensible recipe book. In an expandable recipe book, the last pages are left blank so that readers can note their own notes and recipes.
